Vancouver, in western Canada, was the stage for a showdown between two opposing demonstrations – one against Maduro’s authoritarian rule in Venezuela and one supporting the country’s president. Though the demonstrations stayed peaceful, the two opposing sides did have shouting matches and the supporters of Maduro also brought along revolutionary music which they blasted from speakers.
Venezuela, the country with the largest oil reserves in the world, has been facing shortages in everything from oil to food and electricity due to the mismanagement of the socialist government under president Nicolás Maduro. This has lead to large-scale protests against the government in the country, during which over 60 protestors have been killed. As the calls for a referendum on the president’s impeachment get louder, repressions in the country get more severe, and the situation is becoming increasingly dire.
Below are the raw photos from today’s two demonstrations in Vancouver.
